MCL T20 Knockout
By Sham Ali
(Celebrating 29th Anniversary):- Cosmos held their nerves to secure a hard fought victory in the MCL T20 Knockout competition at Floyd Bennett Field last Sunday after a last over explosion from Islandwide batsmen threatened to snatch the match away. In this shorter version of T20 cricket madness the pendulum just swings out of control with every ball in a hit or miss exhibition, and this match has had its share of the mayhem.
Cosmos had posted a reasonable 159 runs off their allotted 18 overs with Ahsan Riaz getting a composed 26 off 19 balls while C. Dino cracked an aggressive 59 off 24 balls ( 5 6′s and 3 4′s). The dependable Haraldo Marshal then held the lower together with a sensible 30 runs off 18 balls which included 3 6′s, to give his team a fighting total. J. Norelly was the pick of the bowlers as he managed stem the flow of runs earlier with a tidy spell of 5 for 20.
Islandwide needed someone to play a cameo inning and L. Serieux delivered just that as he threatened to single-handedly take his team home. He blazed his way to a belligerent 105 not out (9 6′s; 3 4′s), an inning that would have ensured a victory for most teams in this format of the game, but it was just not enough to penetrate this Cosmos outfit. With 27 runs needed off the last over, Cosmos had backed themselves for a victory with the final over to be bowled by Faisal Taj. However, it was not that easy as Taj, who has been the one to blast the ball around during the season, was on the receiving end of the fireworks this time.
Serieux cleared the ropes three times taking 23 runs off the five balls in the process. The usually cool Taj was nervous, Cosmos may loose with 4 runs needed off the last ball with Serieux on strike. He (Serieux) has a chance to prevent Cosmos from sweeping Islandwide in the three meetings this season, but Taj , the man with ‘green blood’ kept his cool and managed to deliver the most important ball of the match. A dot ball that went through Serieux’s bat and pad give Cosmos the win and a sweep of Islandwide as they take a deep breath and breathe some relief while they prepare for their third semi final bout this season.
Cosmos will play Progressive in the semi final on Sunday at Floyd Bennett Field at 10:30am.
