(Celebrating 29th Anniversary) – Cosmos registered an early win with a combined effort from opening batsman Ryan Persaud who produced a dogged innings followed by a composed one from Marlon Persaud and then a late burst from Faisal Taj to take Cosmos to a comfortable three wicket victory in their season opener over Lions last Sunday at Floyd Bennett field Brooklyn.
Cosmos found themselves in some early trouble after Leikram Latchman (1) was run out from a direct hit in the first over. Regis Burton (10) was just getting settled before he drove loosely to second slip, and Maurice Powell (7) was bowled when he played down the wrong line. With Cosmos on 43 for 3, Ryan Persaud and Marlon Persaud began to repair the innings, streaky at times but determined in their purpose as they chipped away at the opposition’s target and in the process gained some invaluable experience at this level of the game. They accumulated an important 57-run for 4th wicket partnership before Ryan Persaud (42) lost his concentration playing across the line and was out lbw with the score on 100 for 3 in the 25th over.
Vice captain Marlon Persaud then took the anchor role after losing Ryan and Lincoln Deonarine in succession. He and Faisal Taj batted their team into a winning position with Cosmos needing 74 runs in 15 overs. Taj started somewhat circumspect in his first outing on the matting, but soon unleashed a boom boom innings before he was out for an explosive 45 runs in a crucial 6th wicket partnership that worth 63 runs in only 8 overs. His innings insured that Cosmos would achieve their target by the 36th over and gain a batting bonus point. However, It was the out of breath vice captain Marlon Persaud though who remained unruffled and ensured that his wicket was intact leading cosmos to victory with a gritty 42-runs not out with support from Rasheem James and Ricky Kissoon in the end.
Cosmos decision to bowl first after they won the toss and asked Lions to bat yielded early resulted. Sham Ali and Taj struck early blows in their second over. However, C. Myers and C. Mills then settled for a 94-run 3rd wicket partnership before Lalta Persaud struck two vital breakthrough removing both Myers(69) and Mills(32) to return with figures of 3 for 32. Ricky Kissoon ensured that the runs dried up conceded only 17 runs in his 8 overs as Cosmos then fought themselves back into the match in the closing overs. Powell held a nagging line and Ali returned to finish with figures of 3 for 31 when lions inning closed on 177 for 8 off their 40 overs.
It was a good all-round effort from this ‘green’ Cosmos outfit in their season opener and they will be tested as the season heats up with L. Achaibar, C. Bennett, H. Marshall, M. Persaud, and Y. Das on the reserve list. Cosmos Public Relations Officer – www.ondriveupdate.com, Sham Samaroo, reminded the team of the high level of the competition, and that they should aspire to position themselves among the ranks of the top players.
