Guyana Inter-County T20
By John L. Aaron
The 5th Annual Guyana Inter-County Cricket Tournament in New York is slated for next Saturday, August 9th at Idlewild Park in Rosedale, New York. Grand Sponsor Insaf “Bird Man” Ali of Windsor Mechanical, Corporation, once again leads from the front in promoting the T20 Cricket Festival featuring representative teams from the three counties of Guyana – Berbice, Demerara and Essequibo.

Gajanand Singh of Berbice.

The one day cricket festival promises to be a zinger with a lot of bragging rights on the line among the pundits and players alike. For decades the rivalry between the three counties located along the coastline of the South American nation of Guyana, have produced some of the world’s finest cricketers who have represented the West Indies in the international arena, as well as domestic competitions in the Caribbean. The competitive calypso-type flair for the sport of cricket spilled over to the United States and more so the New York metropolitan area which has the largest concentration of Guyanese expatriates in the US, and a vibrant cricketing community.

The one day event will see defending champions Demerara looking to lift the $2,500 first prize once again, leaving the second prize of $1,500 on the table for either Berbice or Essequibo. However, Essequibo commonly referred to as the Cinderella County in Guyana, has put together a very strong line-up for the big Ball, this year.

The event will see two matches played; Berbice taking on Essequibo at 9:00am, and the winner going up against the 2013 champions Demerara at 1:00pm. Demerara received the bye as defending champions and will eagerly await the outcome of the early clash between Berbice and Essequibo. However, all three squads along with their management personnel are asked to be at the ground for the 9:00am start of the event.

The event’s Grand Sponsor Insaf “Bird Man” Ali said, “I am encouraging all Guyanese and other cricket lovers to come out to Idlewild Park next Saturday, to see some excellent fast-paced T20 cricket.” The Guyanese-American businessman added, “Pack a basket with your favorite foods and beverages and bring the whole family to the park for some real fun cricket. Come root for your County, even if you were not born in Guyana.”

Bird Man, as he’s familiarly known, is the Grand Sponsor, but a number of other individuals passionate about the sport, have chipped in to cover the logistical expenses associated with the annual event. The three participating teams are expected to be sponsored by individuals who hail from the respective counties in Guyana, and are fervent supporters of cricket in the New York metropolitan area.

About a dozen current or former US national players are expected to participate in the T20 festival. The teams will wear colored uniforms, adding a kaleidoscope of color to a very colorful annual event, and in an idyllic setting just north of the John F. Kennedy International airport.

Rafeek Nazeer will represent Demerara.
