Sachin Tendulkar, Indian cricketing legend, is currently attending the Laureus World Sports Awards Ceremony in Shanghai. Tendulkar posted a picture on Facebook with himself along with Kenyan long-distance track and road runner Tegla Loroupe, and Chinese basketballer Yao Ming.
Yao Ming is known for his height, towering above mere mortals at seven and a half feet. The Chinese basketballer is also known for being the face of an internet meme. According to PTI, Chinese basketball giant Yao Ming will also be present on the occasion, Laureus said in a statement. The Laureus World Sports Awards is the premier honors event on the international sporting calendar. The winners, as voted by the Laureus World Sports Academy, made up of 50 of the greatest sportsmen and sportswomen of all time, will be unveiled at the globally televised event staged at the world-famous Shanghai Grand Theatre.
Yao Ming is already a winner of a Laureus Award, having been presented with the Laureus Newcomer of the Year Award in 2003 in recognition of his impact on US basketball in the NBA. Tendulkar and Yao Ming were the latest sporting giants to confirm they will be present at the high profile event, which will be hosted by film and TV star Benedict Cumberbatch.
Other leading sports stars coming to Shanghai are former NFL player Marcus Allen, South African rugby legends Schalk Burger and Jean de Villiers, plus Springboks coach Heyneke Meyer, West Indies cricketer Michael Holding, American skateboard sensation Nyjah Huston and British Paralympic star Sarah Storey.
Tendulkar is a legend not only in Indian cricket, but all over the world. Among his vast achievements, he was a part of India’s successful ICC Cricket World Cup 2011-winning squad. He also played 463 ODIs for India, scoring a whopping 18,426 runs at an average of close to 45 with a highest score of 200 not out against South Africa — the first double ton in ODI cricket.
