The West Indies stamped their authority on a young South Africa Invitational XI on the opening day of their three-day tour match at Willowmoore Park in Benoni. A five-for for Sheldon Cottrell and a century for Marlon Samuels were the highlights for the tourists, who have stepped up their preparation ahead of the first Sunfoil Test starting at SuperSport Park in Centurion next week.

The young SA XI batsmen lacked patience in sluggish tennis ball bounce conditions, after captain Dominic Hendricks won the toss and elected to bat in overcast conditions.

The batsmen were unable to hold out the West Indies’ pace attack, led by an impressive performance from Cottrell, who led the SA XI’s collapse of 125 all out. The 25 year-old left-arm seamer took figures of five for 16 in 6.1 overs and was well supported by the rest of the attack featuring Jason Holder (1/22), Jerome Taylor (2/12), Suliman Benn (1/29), Kemar Roach (0/30) and Shannon Gabriel (0/14).

Clyde Fortuin (34) and Aviwe Mgijima (35) were the only notable contributors to SA XI’s poor score, while Stiaan van Zyl spent 40 valuable minutes at the crease on his way to 23.

Rory Kleinveldt was the pick of the bowlers and ended the day with two for 34, while young and promising quicks Daryn du Pavillon, Beuran Hendricks and Rabian Engelbrecht, got a taste of the requirements of top flight cricket.

The West Indies hold a 92-run lead at stumps, with Samuels (103*) and Devon Smith (83*) unbeaten at the crease.
