With preparations for next year’s ICC Cricket World Cup in full flow, Sri Lanka has moved up three places on the Reliance Mobile ICC ODI Championship table following its successful hosting of the tri-series involving India and New Zealand.
Kumar Sangakkara’s team had been placed in sixth position prior to the series but now sits proudly in third, level on points with India and South Africa. Sri Lanka is just behind India, which clings on to second place, and just in front of South Africa, which drops to fourth, when the ratings are calculated beyond the decimal point.
New Zealand drops to sixth position from fourth as Australia, at the top, and England, in fifth spot, remain unchanged. Further down the ladder, Ireland has gained one place to 10th spot on the rankings thanks to a successful retention of the ICC World Cricket League Division 1 title recently in the Netherlands.
The Irish are now just eight ratings points behind Bangladesh and will shortly travel to Zimbabwe for a three-ODI series after a crucial ICC Intercontinental Cup match against Zimbabwe XI in Harare. If Ireland wins all three of those ODIs, it will move ahead of Bangladesh into ninth position for the first time.
Meanwhile, Tillakaratne Dilshan of Sri Lanka has broken into the top five of the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI batsmen and India’s Virender Sehwag has returned to the top 10 following the final of the tri-nation series.
Dilshan’s match-winning effort of 110 in the final against India was enough to earn him a three-place boost in the rankings and he now sits in fourth position, level with Hashim Amla of South Africa. Amla’s team-mate AB de Villiers has benefited from Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s slip with the 26-year-old from Pretoria taking over at the top of the rankings.
The other main mover upwards in the top 10 is Virender Sehwag, who showed fine form throughout the tri-nation series in Sri Lanka. The hard-hitting opener was the series’ top-scorer with 268 at an average of 67.00 and that effort has moved him up eight places on the rankings to eighth place.
By not being involved, India’s Sachin Tendulkar has lost four places and now sits in 10th position. A player loses half a per cent of his rating for every ODI he misses. Leading Black Caps batsman Ross Taylor has gained four places and moves up to 15th position.
India pacer Praveen Kumar has gained five places in the Reliance Mobile ICC Player Rankings for ODI bowlers and has broken into the top 10 for the first time in his career. The 23-year-old took nine wickets in the series at an average of 23.66 and now sits in 10th position in the ladder, level with Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi.
It was also a successful series for Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga, who took seven wickets in the series at an average of less than 20. As a result he has gained 24 places and is back into the top 20 of the rankings, which remain headed by New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori.
