NYSCA,
NY Dream Team Unbeaten In Independence Cup
By Orin Davidson The defending champions chalked up two wins in Group One for an unbeaten record with one round remaining in the preliminaries. New York Dream Team put together a similar unbeaten record in the Group Two preliminaries which will conclude on Saturday morning.
The two top teams from the two groups will advance to the semi-finals set for Saturday afternoon with the final slated for Sunday at Floyd Bennett field in Brooklyn. New York Softball Association (NYSCA) outplayed Caracas All Stars and Guyana All Stars to virtually secure one of the semi-final places. Spearheaded by top players Kris Shobai, Andrew Gonsalves and Peter Sookdeo, they made themselves firm favorites to retain the title and the Eagle Trophy. NYSCA will wrap-up the preliminaries with their final group game against Queens All Stars Saturday. Guyana All Stars and Queens All Stars will clash to determine the second team from Group One for the semis. They both have one win and a loss each. Caracas lost both of their first two games and are virtually out of the competition. And with Guyana All Stars down to play them in the final round, the former team is favored to advance for a second win, to likely join NYSCA from Group One. Queens All Stars have the tougher task opposing NYSCA in the other group game. So far the highlight of the competition has been the bowling of Guyana All Stars’ Frankie Baichu who recorded phenomenal figures of six wickets for seven runs including a hat-trick in leading his team to victory over Queens All Stars. It was the best performance ever in the competition as Queens All Stars was routed for 56 runs in 13 of their allotted 50 overs. They were replying to Guyana All Stars’ 145 in 23 overs at Baisley Park. In Group Two,
New York Dream team dispatched NYSCA #2 and South Florida to cement
their strong position. It leaves South Florida and New York Muslim
League to fight for the second semi-final place, having one win
and a loss each. The odds are on South Florida to advance, though
as they have the weaker opponent in the final round. They will take
on NYSCA #2 which lost their two games so far. NY Muslims will have
to pull off a huge upset against unbeaten NY Dream Team to upturn
the form book and win, in the other game. So far South Florida defeated
NY Muslims which beat NYSCA #2. |
