It’s
Official WISA Is Playing In 2008!
West Indian Softball Association (WISA) officially started its 2008
season on April 6. It was a chilly day but there was some very exciting
cricket.
Traffic on the Van Wyck Expressway usually moves well on Sundays but,
on Sunday it did not. Congestion was the main reason for the delays
but sixes hit by Rebels and Ocean XI on the Van Wyck Expressway service
road did contribute to the traffic delays. Cricket enthusiasts and
curious auto drivers and their passengers sneaked a peek at the proceedings
at Charles Drew Park (Van Wyck Expressway Service Rd & 115th Ave).
Rebels
Cricket Club Beat Ocean XI
In a ‘see-saw’ battle at Charles Drew Park II, Rebels
CC beat Ocean XI CC by 36 runs in the Premier Elite Division.
After winning the toss, Rebels elected to bat first and compiled a
massive 209 for 8 off their allotted 25 overs. Narine Algu and Basil
Balkaran opened the batting and gave Rebels a good start of 56 before
Algu went for a well played 33. Mark Bobb joined Balkaran, but went
for a quick ‘duck’.
Balkarran was joined by J. Sanichar and together they took the score
to 83 when Balkaran was bowled for a quiet 36 that included 3 fours
and a six. Ocean XI struck a few times and Rebels was on their heels
before Mike Balkaran and R. Norton took on Ocean XI’s pace attack
and added a ‘quick fire’ 54. Mike Balkaran went for 22
while Norton was run out for 28.
With the score at 165 for 8 off 21 overs, Raj Mathura was joined by
M. Persaud. Together they batted sensibly, taking singles and doubles
until Mathura hit two sixes and two fours off the 25th over. Mathura
was 30 not out at the end of the inning.
Set a target of 209, Ocean XI opened their batting with B. Tulsi and
their star batsman L. Mohan. They were immediately in trouble when
Mohan was brilliantly bowled by J. Sanichar without scoring. Wickets
fell frequently around Tulsi and Ocean XI was in trouble until Nick
Ramsingh joined him.
The two batted well and actually caught up with the required run rate.
Rebels looked a bit worried until the bowling change of M. Persaud
struck gold for them. Tulsi was bowled by Persaud for a patient 35.
Ramsingh soon went for 31. Ocean XI’s lower order was no match
for M. Balkaran who took a Hat Trick while destroying it. J.Sanichar
took 3 for 31, M. Persaud 3 for 14 and M.Balkaran 4 for 16 were the
wicket takers in Ocean XI’s score of 173 all out.
Warriors
CC Trashed Majestics
At Charles Drew I Warriors CC trashed Majestics CC by 68 runs. Warriors
batted first and made 199 for 4 in their 25 overs. M. Balchan top
scored with 60 runs.
Majestics started well with Azad Hussien and Satish Wilfred but once
Wilfred fell, Majestics was in trouble. Hussien batted steadily for
a well played half century but his supporting cast was not very supportive.
Majestics was bundled out for 131. G. Singh took 4 for 28 while T.
Munnsammy bagged 3 for 28.
In the other Premiere Elite Game, Wild Bunch beat Dynasty.
Richmond Hill Sports Club Still Unbeaten In 2008
Richmond Hill SC made ‘light-work’ of Braves CC at Flushing
Park in Division I Group B play. Braves won the toss and elected to
bat first. They were bundled for 90 off 20.2 overs. S. Outar was Braves’
top scorer with 24. B. Heralall (Max) took 3 for 22 while V. Lutchman
and D. Somwaru took two wickets a piece.
Richmond Hill SC replied with 92 without loss off 11 overs. Ahmad
Shazaman was unbeaten on a superb 50 while Darshan Chickery contributed
29.
