NYSCL Expects Another Phenomenal Softball Cricket Season

By James Persaud

The New York Softball Cricket League 2008 season got off to a superb start last Sunday with the P. K. Realty and Mortgage Company sponsored 25 over Championship. This competition is the one which set the stage for the biggest Inter State softball tournaments. The NYSCL sponsored Independence Cup 08 and the Over 45 Stars Cup 08. If the results of last Sunday games are an indication of what to expect, then the softball cricket fans are in for a treat for the remaining of the season. There were plenty of surprises and upsets in the results last Sunday.

Last season was a breakthrough year for many players and now for this season we see many new teams emerging. This is good for the game but it could have a side effect as the good talented players are spread out very thin. As players juggle from team to team especially in the higher divisions it is expected to have new champions taking the spot light. The Mitch Budhram sponsored, Young Warriors regrouped and immediately caused an upset, knocking of Assassins in a thriller.

Steve Deodat led Braveheart to make easy work of Kris Shobai’s Hustlers. Ecstatic playing in the Premier division for the first time sneak by Untouchables by 2 runs in a nail biter. Country Boys began the season as always playing solid cricket, beating Cavaliers at home. At Seaview Ravi Balli and Dhanraj scored 65 and 68 respectively playing for United Star in winning against Better Hope. Ravi Balli is building a name for himself and a batsman to be reckoned with as he continues from where he left off last season. United Star captain Bobby Pahalad chipped in with 39 runs while grabbing 3 wickets for 11 runs. East Coast won by a walkover against West Dem, while Suresh Ramsarran, Liberty Knights got by Mafia.

In the division 2, the division that teams used as a guide to get to the Premier division is always bringing out the best in its player. Eagles got by Predators for a win and Cotton Field made easy work of Eagle Lounge. Over at Roy Wikins Park Long Beach batting first score was not enough to defend against Williamsburg. Wildfire traveled to the Bronx and took on the Bronx Lions in a high scoring game with Wildfire getting the win. The new Ron Cricket was defeated by Nationals at Seaview. The new crossover Archer played against Titans in a losing battle, while Sheffield got by Roti Express.

In the opening games of the season teams playing in the two lower divisions had players scoring the season’s first century and taking the first hat-trick. In the game between Sunrise and Rising Sun, Vasquez was in remarkable form dominating the day with a century, knocking off Rising Sun in their debut. Liberty Boys won against Unpredictable and New York All-Star crushed Rebels. Better Hope 2 stopped Port Mourant Youth, while at Kissena Ranchers demolished Meten-Mere- Zorg. At Bay Waters Park Apollo XI was no match for Wakefield.

In division 4, the game between Falcons and Local Boys, V. Naidoo grabbed the first hat-trick of the season in a losing cause. Lions led by McLennon played Cricket International in an electrifying game with Lions getting the victory. Legends went to the Bronx and crushed Strikers while at Roy Wilkins Park Triumph’s score was too huge for Ravens.

The newly formed Alliance team sneaks by Flashers and Buccaneers lost to Young Brothers. The Paul Drickpaul led Invaders proved to be too much for Young West Indies.
