Victorious Demerara team.
Raja Dazzling As Demerara Triumphant
By James Persaud
In what has become a custom in softball cricket seeing Eon Ellis in the winning circle receiving the winning prize. Saturday was no different as once again he was collecting for the victorious Demerara in the New York Softball Cricket- Guyana Inter County Twenty20 competition sponsored by Roy’s Sport Bar.
The game got underway with dark clouds and a light drizzle, with defending champions Berbice winning the toss and electing to bat. With a huge crowd on hand the game was delayed by both teams hard pressed to naming their final eleven for the game. Both Demerara and Berbice reached the finals by defeating Essequibo and New York, two Saturday earlier. Over the years this competition has developed in a very much look forward to rivalry between these two teams.
The Berbicians send openers Porran Beria and Seenarine to do battle with Navin Narine and Jai Sanichar; both bowled well especially Sanichar who was getting a lot of swing from the damp condition restricting the batsman from scoring freely. Sanichar was forced to leave the field due to a muscle injure. With Sanichar out of the attack both batsmen took the challenge to Peter Sookdeo, Frankie Baichoo and Ronald Evelyn. Mahendra Seeram (Murph) who was placed into the Demerara team in a last minute decision prove his value as a very intimidating bowler by removing Pooran (31) off stump with his fourth ball. He struck again with the last ball of the same over Seenarine (21) caught and bowled with the total at 69 after 8 overs. Kris Shobai strolled to the crease and looked very confident cutting and driving through the covers for a quick 22 of 10 devilries before been caught of Seeram. Sookdeo continues with the new ball and struck twice removing Andrew Gonsalves (11) middle stump and Kaleem Bux (1). Ivan (11) struggled before been sent back by Seeram for his fourth victims the score was 118 for 6 after 15 overs.
After the tenth over the Berbicans looked set for a score of well into or close to 175 and after the 15 over with the Demerara bowlers on top this total looked impossible. The Berbicans had plenty of hope in their hard hitting all-rounder captain Bobby Pahalad who struck a quick 25 of 13 devilries, Nayeem (6) and Karran (2) did not lost long at the crease. Baichoo rapped up the innings at 158 all out and finish with figures of 2-37, Seeram 4-22, Sookdeo 2-18 and Evelyn 1-29.
The ball by ball commentator for the game Mack had an interview with Berbice (J P Singh) and Demerara (McLennon) managers at half time and both showed confidents in the guys. Demerara send openers Sunil Panday and Ravi Balli to the crease, Berbice captain Bobby removed Panday off stump with his first delivery of the day, Raja Parasram batting at number three struggled at the beginning while Balli (15) make batting looked effortless while playing some fluent drives. In the sixth over Ivan was introduce into the attack and he took the wicket of Balli. Demerara skipper Eon Ellis joined his vice-captain Parasram at the crease and both batted with ease and put on a display of superb batting for the crowd. Ellis more with power hitting and Parsaram stroking the ball and finding the gaps, as the score raced to 107 in thirteen overs. The Berbice captain used 6 bowlers in trying to break the partnership. Bhola Pahalad after been hit for a towering six by Ellis, next ball Ellis (40) trying to repeat could only hit it to deep forward square leg for the running Gonsalves diving to his left taking a beautiful catch.
Peter Sookdeo replaces Ellis and never looked confident and the scoring rate dropped bringing Berbice back into the game. With Parasram still at the crease, he took charge and hit 17 of Kris Shobai over, Shobai struck back removing Sookdeo (10). Frankie Baichoo stepped to the crease and made some big swing before losing his middle stump to Bux for 2 and the total on 150. Navin Narine (4) and Parasram (63) not out who by this time was batting solid and with confident, saw their team home with 10 balls to spare. Bobby took 1-29, Bhola 1-43, Ivan 1-17 Shobai 1-29 and Bux 1-15.
