It’s Bobby Time- Hits Maiden Century

By James Persaud
May 10th, 2008

A few years ago he hit the New York softball cricket circuit and immediately created an impact as a very dominating bowler. Over the years he has placed more interest in his batting and has developed into one of the best all-rounder in the game today. Last season he was awarded one of the most coveted titles in softball cricket, NYSCL cricketer of the year award.

Even though Bobby Pahalad was the first person to win this title without scoring a century, his runs scored and wickets taken was the best overall as an all-rounder. He was only out done by his brother Bhola with a few more wickets. Last Sunday Bobby hit his maiden century against Cavaliers, an even hundred. His batting on this day was emblematic of his style as he struck five fours and nine sixes to race his team to victory with 5 overs to spare.

This year 25 over Championship is shaping up to be another exciting culmination as in all the divisions there are teams who have already qualify for the playoffs after five weeks of competition. In the Premier division there are still 4 undefeated teams in Country Boys, East Coast, Braveheart and United Stars. These teams will be hard press by the surging Liberty Knights, Assassins, Young Warriors, Untouchable, Mafia and Cavaliers.

Division IB
Nationals Keeps The Pressure On

The Shazam Hussain, Nationals is the team to beat in this division as the last season division IIA Mini World Cup champions continues to play dominating cricket after moving up into the higher division. The team is built around an all-star cast of Nagamootoo, McDonald, Nandalall and the Ulla brothers. As teams head into the playoffs the competition will get hotter with the likes of Wildfire, Titans, Bronx Lions, Enterprise, Sheffield and Cotton Field. Nationals and Titans are the only undefeated teams in this division.

Division IIA
John Singh Magnificent In Ranchers Upset

Ranchers beat Rebels last Sunday in a thriller at the Roy Wilkins Park, Queens. With Ranchers needing another 4 runs for victory and one ball remaining in the innings. At the crease for Ranchers was their captain John Singh, the fielders gather in the middle and had a long talk with the bowler. If the talk was to take the pressure of the bowler, it did just that as he send one right down the middle a little short and rising and John smack it over the mid wicket boundary to end the game in Chandrapaul style. John Singh played the innings of his life scoring an unbeaten 66 and Dave Balli contributing 45 in a total of 186 for 6 wickets. Bowling for Rebels A. Persaud took 2 for 34, R. Jaynauth, A. Jaynauth and J. Persaud bagged one wicket each.
The match was reduced to 20 overs Rebels won the toss and elected to bat first, posting a total of 185 for 6 wickets. M. Bisram top score with 44 including [5 x 4, 2 x 6] and R. Gangaram blasted a quick 33 runs not out. Bowling for Ranchers D. Balli, S. Singh and G. Thakur each took 2 wickets.

Undefeated Triumph team.

Division IIB
Triumph Still Undefeated

The Triumph Cricket Club is having a superb run so far in the 2008 season. Last year this team had played some good cricket earlier in the season and made it to the playoffs, and then seems to just hit a bad streak. This season under the management of Budhram and Whitee, who is playing a more integral part in the team maintaining discipline, and the team has played unbeaten after five weeks.
Last Sunday Triumph took on Lions; Triumph won the toss and batted scoring a total off 186 for 7 wickets in their allotted overs. K. Heralall top score with 32, G. Pooran (25) and B. Deopaul (23) were among the runs. Sargi 2 for 27, C. Joseph, S. Springer and J. Joseph took 1 wicket each.
When Lions took the crease they found runs very hard to get against the bowling of B. Singh (3 for 8), Kenny, G. Pooran, K. Heralall, B. Deopaul and Yoda each took 1 wicket. And the Lions were bundle out for 87 after 18 overs. The only batsmen to reach double figures were Crandon 22 and King with 10.

New York Softball Division 1A
Liberty Knights Secure Playoff Spot

After suffering their first loss of the season the previous week, Liberty Knights rebounded to defeat West Dem emphatically by 6 wickets in their fifth match played last Sunday at the Livonia Recreational Park.

Electing to bat after winning the toss, West Dem got off to a quite decent start before they lost their first batsman, run out after a mix up in the middle. Wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals as the Knights players applied and maintained the pressure with some inspired bowling and excellent fielding. West Dem eventually collapsed for 95 runs in just under 18 overs with Morgan making 23. Ravi Murry was the chief wrecker bagging 3 for 17 from 5 overs while Paul Virappen picked up 2 for 10.

After conceding a mammoth 76 extras last week, Knights had a much improved time in the field giving up only 17 free runs this time around.

Requiring a paltry 96 for victory, Liberty Knights had a disastrous start to their innings, losing one of their openers, bowled for a golden duck. This however paved the way for some aggressive strokeplay as Knights raced to their target in 12.1 overs losing 4 wickets in the process. Brian made 26 while Telston Johnson stroked a rapid 22 to remain unbeaten at the end.
