Cosmos Foiled By Rain

June 26th, 2009
Celebrating 28th Anniversary) - After heavy overnight showers delayed the start of their match against Lucas at Marine Park last Sunday, a late afternoon shower came and ultimately washed away any chance Cosmos had of securing a result.

Donald Bennett

Having won the toss, Lucas asked Cosmos to bat on a rather sticky wicket after the match had been reduced to 25 overs. The Cosmos batsmen, as they have done on numerous occasions this season, adjusted their strategy and effectively tackled the prevailing conditions. After New York Region U-19 player Marlon Persaud was undone by a late inswinger from Nalburn Whittaker's opening over, the inform Dennis Evans and Keddy Lesporis had to steady the Cosmos innings with a solid 80-run second wicket partnership. Lucas would effect an important breakthrough, courtesy of Dwayne Waugh, who had Lesporis (46) brilliantly run out off a direct hit on the stumps from short mid off. Soon after, Evans (28) chased a wide and was caught at the wicket. At 86 for 3 off 13 overs, Donald Bennett (23) and the hard-hitting George Adams (34) blasted a quickfire 50-run partnership off the next five overs. Clive Samuels (18) and Shafeek Shah (13) also had meaningful contributions in pushing Cosmos to a challenging total of 180 for 7 off the 25-over allotment. Even a nervous-looking Atiq Baksh, whose pull to deep mid wicket was greeted with loud applause by his teammates, would add his “two cents” and a strike rate to ponder.

While the sun took a brief look at the match and noticed that Lucas in their reply were 40 for 3 after 8 overs, the skies soon opened and washed the match away for a tame draw and sent all the fathers for an important and well-deserving early day home for Father’s day.

In celebration of the club’s 28th anniversary, Cosmos has dedicated the 2009 season as its inaugural benefit year for a prominent contributor to its illustrious past. This year’s honoree will be team manager Shadi Khan. The inaugural celebration is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009 at Floyd Bennett Field. All are invited.

Cosmos will play Spice Island at Marine Park next Sunday.
