Metropolitan Cricket League
Progressive Beat Lucas

July 27th, 2009
At Marine Park, Lucas won the toss and invited Progressive to take first strike on a good strip in brilliant sunshine. Progressive lost their two openers early before nineteen year old N. Bonner and Skipper R. Staples came together for a 160 run third wicket partnership. Staples was the first to go for a crafty 98 with nine fours and three sixes; Bonner brought up his first century in the Metropolitan League with a six over long on, he was eventually out for a very well played 126 including ten fours and three sixes.

M. Alexis entertained with some lusty hitting to end unbeaten on 60. Progressive 331 for 6 in forty over, R. Staples 98, N. Bonner 126; M. Loten 8-0-45-2 was the pick of Lucas bowlers he was supported by D. Waugh 7-0-41-1.

When Lucas took their turn at the wicket they were bundled out for 115 in 28 overs. Only the drama of threatening showers offered some semblance of hope as the progressive bowlers tightened their grip on the game. Skipper Richard in a great all-round performance introduced himself into the attack after two overs to speed up the over rate, he bowled well for eight overs on a trot, varying his pace and flight, ending his spell 8-1-29-3; he was ably supported at the other end by Maurice Cole 8-0-41-1.

The tactic proved too much for Lucas they had no answer for the slow bowling. Coming on to replace Staples centurion Bonner made rings around the tail with his right arm leg breaks. He finished with impressive figures of 5-0-12-3. Only O. Crawford (37) and D. Baugh (17) offered any resistance, the pair put on 55 for the second wicket before Crawford was run out in an unfortunate mix-up.

Progressive won by 216 runs; Progressive 331 for 6 in 40 overs, Lucas in reply 115 all out in 28 overs.

Progressive will now meet Cosmos who got the better of Westbury in the other semi-finals in the Division One Finals next Sunday August 2, 2009 in Canarsie Park.
