Rockaway CC Carted Off Super-Four Cup
Brilliant display of cricket by Sudesh Dhaniram and Jerry Jumadeen
enabled Rockaway Cricket Club to celebrate in triumph over Vikings
cubbies last Sunday.
Scores: Vikings CC 199 for 9 from 40 overs.
Rockaway CC 201 for 4 from 35.3 overs.
A colorful display was on hand as team Vikings dressed in yellow top
while team Rockaway donned their customary green top, as the voice
of Carl Bennett and Lenny Aichabar was heard beaming throughout the
day delivering ball by ball commentary via WICR radio (1620 AM).
Vikings skipper Hemnarine Harrinarine calling the toss correctly and
opted to bat. The Gomes boys, Mark and Mark A., dominated Rockaway
CC bowling, posting 60 runs from 14 overs before Mark Gomes gave way
to a lower back strain.
Mahendra Kanhai joined Mark A. and carried Vikings to 66 before Mark
A. was caught by Siewchan off the bowling of J. Hardeen for 39 (4x4).
Vishal Nagamootoo, Vikings most experienced player, added 33 runs
to Vikings total before he was caught and bowled by Jerry Jumadeen.
Jumadeen, who hails from the land of the Humming Bird, Trinidad and
Tobago, sent 4 Vikings batsmen, Gomes 39, Kanhai 14, Nagamootoo 33,
and Nandkumar 0 back to the pavilion while giving up 28 runs in the
process.
Precariously placed at 134 for 6 from 31 overs, Vikings lower order
batsmen battled to reach 199 for 9 wickets. Harrinarine 22, Persaud
20, Bahadur 18 and the Mahesh brothers, Robert and Alin 6 and 4 not
out respectively.
In addition to Jumadeen’s 4 for 28, support came from Siewchan
3 for 62 and J. Hardeen 2 for 33.
Vikings wicket fell at: 65, 94, 94, 103, 108, 132, 150, 173 &
192.
In reply, Rockaway led by Sudesh Dhaniram 69 (6x4&3x6) from 32
balls before he was caught on the midwicket boundary by Bahadur off
the bowling of M.A.Gomes. During the season, Dhaniram scored in excess
of 1,200 runs. As a result, showing off his “upper class’
of batting was no surprise. New York Region under 19 player Saud Hussian,
who opening the batting, registered a well played 68 runs, hitting
2 fours in the process. Kundan 24 not out and Jumadeen 3 not out,
saw Rockaway to their target score.
Rockaway wicket fell at: 24, 100, 163 & 174.
Bowling for Vikings, Bahadur 2 for 39, while Nandkumar and M.A.Gomes
1 wicket each.
The President / Captain of Rockaway CC, Hafeez Ali, praised his team
for their effort and support throughout the year. Mr. Ali said “Your
efforts and persistence paid off handsomely this season, among other
awards, we are the regular season champions, and, the Super-Four A
division champions.”
Chief Operating Office for Nassau League, Mr. Bhola Ramsundar, also,
the President and owner of Vikings Cricket Club, said at the conclusion
of the match “I am extremely proud of my team, and the mannerism
in which they conducted themselves throughout the year. We did not
win title this year, but, we will be back next year.”
The management and staff of Nassau Cricket League would like to thank
all those who have made this season a success.
The league will finish-off this season with an inaugural Twenty/20
tournament starting this weekend and concluding on Sunday October
1, 2006.
