Vikings And Carpet Doctor Played To Nail Biting Finish
Vikings Cricket Club spoiled a dramatic comeback from Carpet Doctor
as they escaped to a 3 runs victory last Sunday, July 30th at the
Beach 32 ground in Far Rockaway.
Chasing a respectable 220 made by Vikings, Carpet Doctor seemed well
out of it at 162 for 7 in the 35th over of the 40 over allotment game
only to made a remarkable run that saw the home team scoring some
52 runs in 3.4 overs before being all out for 217.

up a wicket to leave Carpet Doctor in more trouble at 169 for 8 after
36 over.
Neil Tulloch and L. Mangal then took 24 runs off the 37th over bowled
by vice captain Vijay Persaud. Off spinner Mark Gomes did not help
his team causes by giving up 22 off the 38th over but picked up a
key wicket in Mangal (12) caught at short third man.
With the score at 217 for 9 in the 39th over, Tulloch attempting to
finish off the innings was bowled by M.A Gomes for an entertaining
innings of 42 runs from just 12 balls to give Vikings a thrilling
3 runs victory. Tulloch brought life to the large crowd in attendance.
His innings was decorated with 2 fours and 4 sixes.
Earlier Vikings skipper Hemnarain Harrinarain winning the toss and
batting first, got off a good start, with Mark Gomes and Mark A. Gomes
putting together 43 before the latter played on to his stumps for
16 off the bowling of former USA off spinner Rudy Narine. Mark Gomes
soon after played across the line to C. Williams and was given out
LBW for a well played 28 (5x4). Inform Mahendra Kanhai, hit a quick
fire 21 before he was caught in the covers by Narine off the bowling
of Williams. Former Guyana national wicketkeeper Vishal Nagamootoo
with an accomplished 60 runs, steadied Vikings innings. At 83 for
3 from 14 overs wickets continue to fall at regular intervals, Harrinarine
(11), Bhaskar (14), V.Persaud (1) and Ramesh Nandkumar (1) all going
cheaply.
Nagamootoo was finally out in the 27th over going caught behind attempting
to cut at leg spinner L. Ram to leave Vikings precariously placed
at 167 for 8.
The pair of Robert and Alin Mahase then added a valuable 41 runs for
9th wicket, Robert contributing 30 not out (4x4) while brother Alin
chipped in with 9 runs. Last man Chilli Gomes (1) was then trapped
L.B.W. by P. Dyanand to end the Vikings innings at 220.

In reply, Carpet Doctor stuck to the required run rate and was in
control as they reached the century mark in just the 19th over with
8 wickets in hand. Williams and Ram put together 71 runs before Ram
was the brilliantly caught by Kanhai at first slip off Alin Mahesh
for 23 runs. With Carpet Doctor’s century mark coming in the
19 over, Skipper Harrinarain had other ideas. He brought the combination
of himself and Nagamootoo in the bowling attack. The pair immediately
suffocated the Doctor’s batsmen while picking up wickets at
regular intervals.
Rudy Narine 29 runs added a 38 runs partnership with Williams to the
total before he was caught behind by Nandkumar off of Harrinarain.
C.Willims played a patient innings before he became Harrinarain’s
second victim. Williams 59 runs was aided by 5 fours and 1 six.
It soon became 169 for 8 after 36 over, little did Vikings know they
will have to work hard to prevent a strong comeback from the Doctors.
Carpet Doctor wickets fell at 1, 71, 109, 113, 118, 119, 144, 166,
215 and 217.
