Runs Flooded The Mid Islanders
(COSMOS) - Cosmos inflicted a crushing blow to Mid Island last Sunday
at the Floyd Bennett test ground, in this the last match of the MCL
Challenge Cup (color clothe) competition, and ultimately pushed this
reinforced Mid Island out of the playoffs.
Cosmos was sent in to bat under hot and humid conditions; a welcomed
decision that baffled Cosmos, but nothing surprised us anymore against
this opponent. Openers Dixeth Palmer (44) and Dennis Evans (18) weathered
a good opening spell making full use of any loose delivery in a 74
runs partnership before Clem Thompson removed both batsmen in the
13th over. Orlando Baker (46) continued his fine form, he batted intelligently
with his partner Martin Nurse, the more aggressive, for an important
partnership of 104 runs taking the score to 178 in the 28th over,
and thus setting the stage for the fireworks.
Vinord Woolcock (39) and Livingston Puckering (36) further drove an
already battered Mid Island team to their knees perhaps regretting
every syllable when their captain said to Cosmos “you bat first.”
These two Cosmos batsmen blasted another 84 runs off the last seven
overs before Cosmos closed their inning on improbable 262 for 5 off
35 overs. Cosmos bowlers further salted this wounded Mid Island team.
Sham Ali’s varied medium proved too much sending the first three
batsmen packing. With the score on 53 for 3, the result was predictable
with this cosmos bowling attack. A few brave innings ensued, but when
David Mohamed dismantled the woodworks on three occasions and Dennis
Evans snapped up another two wickets, Cosmos sealed a routine victory.
Cosmos will play Villagers in the semi finals on Sunday.
